Overview
This project was a freelance commission from Global Human Resource Malaysia, an agency involved in placing workers with international cruise lines. In 2023 they needed promotional material for a recruitment event aimed at candidates interested in cruise ship careers, and the deliverable was a standing banner plus a realistic mockup showing how it would look on site.
The work was executed as a solo freelance engagement, covering layout, typography, visual assets, and presentation mockups.
The design challenge
A standing banner is read from a distance, often in a crowded hall, by people who are moving. That shapes a few practical constraints:
One clear message and one clear call to action — recruitment information has to survive a three-second glance.
Type sized for the real viewing distance, with the headline readable above the crowd.
A vertical composition that keeps important content near eye level rather than at the very top or bottom of the banner.
Print-safe assets — resolution, bleed, and colour that still hold up after the banner is printed at full size.
Process and tools
The workflow combined three tools, each for what it does best:
Canva — composition and typographic layout, useful for fast iterations on hierarchy and spacing while keeping every element easy to adjust.
Adobe Photoshop — asset clean-up, compositing, colour correction, and building the mockup so the client could see the banner in a realistic setting.
Gemini — AI image generation for supporting visuals, which shortened the time spent searching for or producing background imagery.
What this project demonstrates
Designing for print is a different discipline from designing for a screen: the file has a physical size, an audience standing several metres away, and no scrolling to rescue a weak hierarchy. This commission was an exercise in translating a client's recruitment message into a single readable vertical layout, and in presenting the result through a mockup so the outcome could be approved before printing.
